CD Design Print Out

Ben and Shakel had already designed the Front and Back Cover of the DVD cover, therefore with their images they had used I put together their designs into one and decided to print that onto a DVD to make it look more like a DVD game.

Dumpster scene

This is the Flash scene i had to create. The detective has to investigate just outside the museum to find clues. For this scene, i used various transparent buttons as well as fade in for text. It was a very simple process and didn't require much Action script, but the final outcome is very presentable.

Questioning Suzy Scene

This scene was made similarly to the Shax scene. In order for me to do this, i used the shax scene as a template and worked from there. The colour for suzzy was yellow. A difficulty i experienced in making this scene was that the next buttons wouldnt work at times and it had a habit of looping the questions.

Questioning Shax scene

This scene was made following the same principles as the rest of the Questions. This included clicking the character, moving to bio, then the video of the alibi, then actual set of Questions. The colour for shax was red. The video is slightly choppy because the Mini DV recoreder in one of the labs chewed up the tape.

Computer password scene

This is a scene I was assigned to create. It involves the user memorising a colour code and inputting it into the computer to gain access to a surveillance camera. I had to first collect images off a computer and make the buttons in photoshop. The flv wave videos were downloaded from a royalty free site and inputted into the right frames. Then i did research online and founf a simple code that worked very well with what i had planned. Once the user gains access, the last part is just a matter of watching a video, reading some text and clicking an image to move onto the next scene. The image has a rollover text effect applied to it.

Flash Production

This is a mini-game in the flash application which is critical to the progression of the story as well as being highly interactive. The aim is that there is a computer with a password on it. The password is a colour code and the colours have to be pressed in the right order for the computer to grant the user access. to make this game i had to get the coding right, so to begin with, i started off with a very unorganised look to the stage in flash so that i could concentrate on the code

Video Editing

After recording the blue screen sessions, i had to edit the videos and remove the bluescreen / add effects to make the scene come to life. I used the Motion software to do the keying. here are sample screenshots of my work in progress:

Photoshop Editing

These are some pictures i took for the scenes we will be inserting into flash shortly. I used photoshop techniques to cut out these pictures. Once they are imported into flash, they will be layered with a background image and run in sequence to make a short movie clip. These cut outs are for the scene where Jack discovers a gun and a bloody shirt outside in a dumpster. The gun scene has 5 images and the shirt scene has 6 images

Front cover development

I decided to make a front cover for the the game. It can be used as part of the dvd cover or as a promotional material.

I started off with some rough ideas on paper and there were two ideas which i felt confident with. The first one was good, but it didnt have the neccessary "lonely" feel to it. So i decided to go with the 2nd idea.

Here are screenshots showing the development of the work. The idea was to get across a feeling of solitude in the Noir style.

here is the Final image. I tried to make the Blacks in the picture as dark and contrasted as possible to show the Noir style.

I was working with the colours and decided to do some experimenting. Here is a version of the final cover which will not be used but has an alternate colour scheme.

We booked the blue screen room out to film some parts of the project and here's some photos to show our working progress as we go on.

Character strengths: Is highly independent and can work under serious pressure. A very skilled detective who’s intelligence has saved his life and the life of others on numerous occasions.

Likes: Likes challenges and takes up the most difficult missions. He likes strong coffee and his wife.

Dislikes: He dislikes losing. He cannot stand people who talk too much, they annoy him.

Background info: Started off working with the force but he didn’t like being told what to do or their methods. He went private four years ago and has the highest reputation in the business. Met ***** while working a case for her soon after he went private. They got married two years ago.

Likes: Likes spending time with her husband. Is a huge fan of any rare artefact and loves the mysteries that history holds.

Dislikes: Dislikes anything that harms the body such as cigarettes

Background info: She comes from a wealthy family who wanted her to follow in the family tradition and become a lawyer. She had no passion for it so she went on her own and worked hard to succeed in life. Found many rare artefacts, some of which she sold to make enough money to construct a museum.

Character strengths: Can be relied upon to get a certain job done. He’s lack of emotion means he never complicates anything.

Likes: Plotting and scheming his next devious plan. Likes gadgets

Background info: Well known across the criminal underworld, He started off small but quickly moved up the ranks due to his intelligence and ruthlessness. Thinks Jack will be a good challenge for him

Background info: Comes from a wealthy family, living alone in a luxurious flat while studying at university. Is in her final year of university and hopes to become a Geologist. Father recently passed away so Suzzy has inherited her father’s wealth. His dying wish was that she finished university and not rely on the money. She is the insurer for the diamond that has been stolen

Research into Film Noir (Noir movies)

As i have to do The editing for the Video clips that we will shoot, i thought it would be best for me to do research into the Film Noir genre and get some insight into it so that i may use this for my own work.

Film noir is a term given by French critics (and adopted into English) to a genre of Hollywood films made between the 1940s and the 1950s. Film noirs were usually set in an urban criminal underworld. Typical characters are private detectives (like Raymond Chandler’s Philip Marlowe, played by Humphrey Bogart) and femmes fatales. The visual style of film noirs is dark or high-contrast and shadowy. The tone is cynical, pessimistic, and even fatalistic.

Film Noir (literally 'black film or cinema') was coined by French film critics (first by Frank Nino in 1946) who noticed the trend of how 'dark', downbeat and black the looks and themes were of many American crime and detective films released in France following the war

The primary moods of classic film noir were melancholy, alienation, bleakness, disillusionment, disenchantment, pessimism, ambiguity, moral corruption, evil, guilt, desperation and paranoia


Film noirs have recently been released in the modern era and have been refashioned for present-day sensibilities. A number of them in the 70s were hard-boiled policeman-hero films that contained film noirish characteristics. Most neo-noirs attempted to re-establish the moods and themes of classic noirs. Some examples are:


Writer/director Christopher Nolan's Memento (2000) was a confounding, mind-bending tale told in backward-jumping reverse, featuring a hero (Guy Pearce) without short-term memory, and Carrie Ann Moss as a potential femme fatale

co-director Robert Rodriguez' monochrome R-rated Sin City (2005) with computer-generated visuals was based on Frank Miller's comic book tale about a corrupt seedy metropolis with rain-slicked streets, and all the noir requisites: a voice-over narration (by Josh Hartnett), a tough-guy hero/ex-con named Marv (Mickey Rourke), a sexy and manipulative femme fatale named Gail (Rosario Dawson), an aging policeman named Hartigan (Bruce Willis) protective of exotic stripper/dancer Nancy (Jessica Alba)
